Pride Month. Let's talk about it. One hot take: Unfortunately, a lot of us who found a way to come to be very comfortable with ourselves, through perseverance and most times, simply survival find ourselves with those close to us who aren't proud of us and what we may have accomplished and endured. Politics, religion (usually the result of misinterpretation of and "cherry picking", IMO), unawareness, misunderstanding , ignorance and sometimes disgust - all play into this. Basically, IMO, it's a lack of empathy, sometimes narcissism and "group-think". A great deal of us have missed out on opportunities to enjoy life as our true selves, for fear of ridicule and harm or losing those that we hold dear. While I am EXTREMELY grateful to finally to be able to live my life on my own terms, sometimes I wonder how different and very most-likely better that my life would have been, had the world been more accepting, during my upbringing. I feel that I have missed and entire childhood and adolescent experience, myself, having to hide who I truly am for the majority of my life. My 20's, 30's even the majority of my 40's lost to someone who I never wanted to be, but had endured and survived. Friend-groups that I never got to experience forming, events, dating experiences, all of it. I'm sure that a great deal of my social anxiety, for example, comes from the need for self-preservation by hiding who I was and keeping people at a distance, emotionally, being able to have the freedom to feel comfortable with who I am and losing out on various experiences that align with who I truly am. So... for those not in the community who feel like we're "shoving it in your face" or whatever makes you feel put-off by Pride month and events, try to keep these things in mind before sharing vitriol about your feelings, openly. Try to have a little empathy. If you can't be supportive, just simply be quiet. Most of us have lived our entire lives missing-out and are just trying to capture the joy that we've missed out on, for so long.
